Style, is beautifully designed with a full relief sculpture portraying either the Greek god Pan, a faun or satyr or a Gothic gargoyle of the devil. Pan was a significant figure in the Romantic movement in European art in the 19th century. In Greek mythology, satyrs were rustic fertility spirits and the companions of Pan. The figure also resembles representations of the devil as found in Gothic gargoyles or column capitals in French churches. The figure holds up a stylized shell adorned with acanthus leaves, above which is a shelf. The bottom is designed with garlands, a flower, acanthus leaves and lotus leaves. This piece is in very good condition with the exception of normal signs of age and a missing petal on the flower. This impressive shelf will be an authentic antique French addition to your decor.
