RARE LARGE HEUBACH CROUCHING PIANO BABY. Large antique Victorian piano baby figurine. It’s made of bisque porcelain and was manufactured by Gebruder Heubach in Lichte, Thuringia, Germany during the late 1800′s or early 1900′s. It depicts a naked infant girl (possibly a boy with long hair) crouching in a squat position with her hands down and head tilted to the side. She has long blonde hair and intaglio blue eyes. She has expertly modelled facial features, fingers, and toes. This piano baby is quite large and measures about 7 3/8″ tall, 5 1/2″ wide, and 6 1/8 long. The underside of the base is marked with the incised Gebruder Heubach “sunburst” mark used between 1882 and 1915. It also has several other undecipherable incised marks and the painted number “43″. It’s guaranteed to be an antique Victorian-era piece and not a modern reproduction. If you’re not already familiar with Gebruder Heubach, the firm was founded in 1843 by two brothers, Georg Christoph and Philipp Jakob Heubach. The factory continued in the family until 1938 when the firm filed for bankruptcy. The company was most famous for making doll heads (beginning in 1910). They employed especially skillful modelers, many of whom were trained at the school for sculptors in Lichte founded by Gebruder Heubach in 1862. The heads often had molded hair and intaglio eyes, a technique used to create an illusion of depth and realism in painted eyes. Piano babies created by Heubach are among those most treasured by collectors. Condition of this Heubach piano baby is EXCELLENT with no chips, cracks, or fleabites. There are a few stray paint marks and minor spots of paint wear. There might still be some dirt in the deeper crevices. Overall, this antique piano baby looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself. This squatting baby figurine is VERY RARE, especially in this large size. The only other examples I’ve seen pictured online were smaller than this one (only 6 tall). See my other listings.
