In French, in the Black Forest style, is beautifully designed with a full relief sculpture portraying either the Greek god Pan, a faun or satyr or a Gothic gargoyle representing the devil. Pan was a significant figure in the Romantic movement in European art in the 19th century. In Greek mythology, satyrs were rustic fertility spirits and the companions of Pan. The figure also resembles representations of the devil as found in Gothic gargoyles or column capitals in French churches. The shelf is adorned with flowers, leaves and arabesques. This piece is in very good condition with the exception of normal signs of age including several small cracks, not affecting the stability of the piece, and very small losses of detail between the two flowers on the left side and at the bottom.
