Fantastic large Parian ware figure of Apollo. Apollo is the patron of Shepards and herdsman and so here he is portrayed with a sheep beneath him. The piece stands a commanding 18.5 or so tall. There are some condition issues but it still displays well. The fingers on one hand are all chipped. Lastly there is a repair on the neck. There’s a tiny chip above the repair. The saving grace of this situation is that Apollo naturally has his head cast down looking to the ground. As his head is tilted down it hides his neck almost entirely when viewed from the front. It wasn’t until I had it in my hands when I picked it up that I noticed. I had the figure laying laterally in my hands and that’s when I saw it. When it’s upright viewed from the front it’s really not apparent, particularly when viewed straight on or from above. It displays surprisingly well considering it’s issues. I have had it on a pedestal in my living room. I now have another large Parian ware figure that I’ll be putting in its place so I’ll be moving on from this one. This is a very rare version of Apollo. I have only seen this particular version with the sheep once before. It was likely made by one of the fine British porcelain producers of the 19th century. The quality is very good. The detail is very fine and impressive. The quality is most apparent in the flowing robe, face, and tree trunk I think. It is a very solid piece weighing in at 6lbs.
