A Very Sweet Piano Baby. A sweet little girl is wondering. Can my puppy read? As he stares quite convincingly at her book.. C 1900 Victorian Era. A very rare piece from our own collection. Beautifully painted and modeled, this piece is Heubach quality. Though there is no maker’s mark. Impressed on the front base. “You Can’t Read”. A BIG piece, striking on display. 12 x 12 inches. Heavy, solid, it weighs over 7. And I’m happy to say it’s in excellent condition as well, no damage at all. What is a piano baby? As the name suggests, these were porcelain babies that lived on top of pianos. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, every well-appointed parlor had a piano. And every respectable piano wore a fancy shawl, or piano drapery. Were often works of art in themselves: embroidered silk or woven tapestries with. Tassels or handmade lace edging. Piano babies sat on top of the shawl. Ensuring that the shawl did. Not slide off the piano, because. A proper piano must never drop its shawl.. The dog, a lab or collie, has beautifully carved fur; it is so lifelike, you almost want to reach out and stroke it. Her companion sister piece shown below is also available. They have matching dresses and display together beautifully. Haven’t had time to list yet, but please inquire if interested. I have several other piano babies for sale. Here’s one, it’s a large 15. See my other listings for more. All photos are taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color. Though monitor colors may vary. These are items from my own collection. I’ve taken great care to provide an accurate description and have provided many large clear photos. The high resolution photos are part of the description.
